In 1845, the railroad from Boston on the Fitchburg route gave Shirley, Massachusetts the push it needed to fully develop. With the influx, industries emerged on the scene, including Samson Cordage Company and C.A. Edgarton Suspender Factory, the second largest supplier of suspenders in the country.

Today, the town has a good mix of residential and commercial areas. Shirley is a friendly place to visit or live.
