In the mid-1800’s Ayer, Massachusetts had four different railroads intersecting within it. Two of those were the Fitchburg Railroad and the Stony Brook Railroad. Today, the most used train service in Ayer is the commuter rail into nearby Boston. Ayer has a charming historic downtown full of community shops. If Main Street isn’t enough to fill your history need, Fort Devens Historic District will. Fort Devens Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
