Along with the village of East Freetown, Assonet, Massachusetts is a village in the larger community of Freetown. Assonet was settled in 1659 and rests on the banks of the Assonet River in Southern Massachusetts. One of the original settlements that made up the Plymouth Colony, Assonet comes from the Wampanoag Indian word meaning “song of praise” and “place of rocks”. A member of the National Register of Historic Places since 1999, Assonet is home to such historic landmarks as the Assonet Burying Ground, North Church, Village School, St. Bernard’s Church, and the Colonel Thomas Gilbert House.
