Originally, New Marlborough, Massachusetts was established by the Great and General Court to protect a wilderness trail. This trail was the single route from the lower Housatonic Valley to the Connecticut Valley and Boston. New Marlborough remains very rural today and includes five villages; Clayton, Hartsville, Mill River, New Marlborough Village, and Southfield.
