Although it is more than 100 miles from Boston, Charlemont, Massachusetts was one of the first townships of Boston. Being so remote made the town very susceptible to Native American raids. Since it was an agricultural town, Charlemont stayed very rural until the railroads were built and tourism became a bigger part of the town’s local industry.
Charlemont is surrounded by the Berkshire Mountains, making it a great place for skiing or hiking. The North River and Deerfield River both flow through town. Whitewater rafting is a popular activity on the Deerfield River. Zoar Outdoor, Crabapple Whitewater, and Moxie Outdoor Adventures are just three of the options for planning such a trip. The famous Mohawk Trail passes through Charlemont. It is a scenic route that was based on an old Native American trade route. Today it has many historical markers along its path.
